Recieved with damage - then no refund given. September 4, 2010 WILLZSCFCx Received next day - the side of the box was damaged so opened the box to see how the phone was. The phone had a few scratches on the silver bit - asked for refund, and they said yes they'll give me some money back, which I never received!
Then I asked for the returns address and sent back for a FULL refund. Then apparently they never received it - which on the tracking number, it said they have.
Now royal mail and police are involved!
Can't make everybody happy, I guess. I am certainly not. August 25, 2010 Paulo Seth (Berkshire, UK.) I acknowledge and respect the number of positive reviews about this phone, but maybe what is important for the other reviewers isn't important to me. I am massively disappointed about this phone. This is the 1st BlackBerry I have. My previous Smartphone was a Windows mobile which I really liked. This phone was given to me as a present and I'm going to try a bit harder to get accustomed to it before giving up and selling it on Fleabay.
Here are a few things I don't like about the phone:
One important thing to me is to keep calendar, tasks, memos and contacts in constant synch with Outlook. I am not a corporate user and really don't want the phone to synch over the mobile network, so the Desktop Synch is the best option. Well, out of the box, version 5 of the Blackberry Desktop Software did not support Office 2010...bugger. Given that the release version of Office 2010 has been out for quite some time now, this was really disappointing. About a month ago, version 6 of the Blackberry desktop software was released and they seemed to have addressed that as it works now. Yet, I really hate cables and Bluetooth synch is still impossible (WiFi synch isn't even an option). I've traced complaints about Bluetooth connectivity on Win 7 for nearly 2 years on the internet. That is unacceptable to me.
Some of the reviews seem to point to how good the Internet Browser is. My experience is that if you navigate to any site that is not meant for mobiles the browser stalls most of the time. Endless waiting time on "running script" is shown in the bottom of the screen the screen keeps resizing all the time and in some instances the browser (& the phone) stops responding (try the BBC weather site or the non-mobile eBay for instance). My old Windows Mobile phone had no trouble navigating them.
Maybe is because I was too used to touch screens, I simply don't seem to be able to get used not to point straight at what I want to do and have to scroll through endless menu options with that painful roller ball thing, which often leads me to click on the wrong option and have to go back.
The user interface for configuration settings in this phone (and I presume on most other Blackberrys) is a disgrace. Very unintuitive and hard to understand, apart from being a pain to navigate through.
To replace the 2GB Micro SD that came with it with my old 8 GB was yet another pain. The mixing of the number pad and QWERTY Keyboard is another thing I simply cannot get used to. It is not always intuitive for all apps when you need to press the ALT key to get the numbers or when they will come up on their own... and don't even get me started on the size of the keys, which might be OK for a 5 year old kid, but not for me.
Talking about apps, maybe this is of my own fault as I can't seem to get enthusiastic enough about this phone in order to try to find out why I can't get Blackberry apps to work, hence cannot install any apps I want. Some of the apps I did manage to install such as Google Mail for Blackberry fail to start after being installed (says "this program requires a working data connection", whatever that means, when I had just downloaded it over the internet with the phone). MSN Messenger also won't install at all (not that I need it really, but it's yet another disappointment). The media side of the phone is also very poorly handled.
What really topped it all was the fact that to obtain any sort of support from Blackberry, it seems, you not only need to buy the phone but a bloody support contract too. Maybe I'm naive but I was under the impression that for any other thing manufactured and sold to the general public there are laws that guaranty some level of support at least during the period in warranty. Maybe I am wrong or Blackberry's lawyers have a different interpretation of the law.
I am not really a "phone person" (or so I thought) hence I see no justification to replace it for now, but I am very inclined to say this will be my last Blackberry even if I manage to stick with it a while longer.
Addictive ! July 30, 2010 Dolores As it seems all blackberry's are as addictive as the other. I find that the 8900 is much more sophisticated (that being lookswise) than the 8520.
All around it is a good phone; good camera, easy to use the trackball etc.
Only problems I have had with it so far is that it likes to freeze alot (which I find quite unacceptable considering I have not even had this phone for a month) and I have had to turn it off and restart it at least 5 times; also I find the Blackberry Messenger stops working quite often.
Really happy in general July 19, 2010 RozziD (Lincoln, England) Like many other reviewers, I have had many different phones in the past including the Blackberry 8310, but this is by far the best smart phone I have had. The fact that it is wifi enabled makes using the internet on the move a breeze and all of the features are fast loading. The only issue I have had with the phone is that on occasion I can not zoom when using the camera, but this is a small problem taking into consideration that it does wverything else I need it to - including an app for my Tesco Clubcard!!
A great phone and well worth the money.
Amazing comunications tool July 9, 2010 Vikram Hi, I have just now bought Blackberry Curve 8900 Sim free phone. Its an amazing device. I used to use Nokia before switching on to blackberry. The OS is really fast and very user friendly. I was always redudant to switch from Nokia to Blackberry as I personally found nokia to be more user friendly & over the years I had got used to all its settings so didnt want to change.
But Curve 8900 changed my perception. Very ease to setup, light wieght & certainly the best design among all Blackberry handsets, totally value for money. Sim free means I can use any networks sim & enjoy.
One word of caution here. This set has wifi, so you can use it to browse the internet using ur home network. But thats it. All other applications like facebook app, gtalk app , gps maps etc cannot be used without having a regular Blackberry data plan. I searched a lot on the net to find a solution but honestly there isnt one. So if you think you can use ur 'pay as you go sim' then you can only use this set for calls, sms , mms & internet browsing using wifi. For anything else like push emails, apps, bb messenger etc you need to have a BB data plan.
The set was in perfect new condition & delieved very quickly. Full marks to amazon.
